In this annual meeting, presidents and chancellors have an opportunity to shape the future direction of WASC in collaboration with the ACSCU Commission and Executive Director Ralph Wolff. This year, pressures are mounting on several fronts. In Washington, there are continuing calls for accountability and unprecedented new regulations from the Department of Education. Efforts are underway to move accreditation from a quality improvement to an oversight role. At the same time,state and pivate funding is declining, while student need for financial support is rising. How should the Commission evaluate institutions caught between such internal and external forces? At this session, we will map strategies and discuss plans flor a 2-year review of the 2001 Handbook of Accreditation. Presidential involvement in these discussion is essential.
